Tilkut Sugar (तिलकुट चीनी)
The famous Tilkut Sugar is a traditional Indian sweet delicacy originating from the Magadh region of Gaya, Bihar, and also popular in Jharkhand. It is prepared using finely pounded sesame seeds (Til / Sesamum indicum) and refined sugar, following age-old traditional methods.
Tilkut is well known for its distinctive crispiness, rich aroma, and authentic taste, making it one of the most cherished winter sweets of Bihar.

- Tilkut is specially prepared and consumed during the Makar Sankranti festival
- Also known as “Tilkatri”
- References to Tilkut are found in ancient Buddhist literature, where it is mentioned as “Palala”
- Traditionally associated with the harvest season, especially winter when sugarcane is freshly harvested
Types of Tilkut
- Traditionally, three varieties of Tilkut are available:
- Sugar Tilkut (White) – made with refined sugar
- Shakkar Tilkut (Light Brown) – made with unrefined sugar
- Gur Tilkut (Dark Brown) – made with jaggery (this product)
- Each variety has a distinct flavor and texture.
Shape -
- Large circular pieces are called Tilkut
- Smaller nut-sized pieces are known as Tillouri
